Compound Intervals

In
the previous lesson we discussed adding extensions to the tonic major seventh
chord. In that lesson, we glazed over the subject of intervals larger than an
octave. These are known as compound intervals.

Compound
intervals are actually quite simple to understand and begin to use. The best
way to start, is likely by analyzing the term itself. We know what intervals
are, and we know what compound means. Therefore, we can likely guess
(correctly) that compound intervals are nothing more than combinations of
intervals.
However,
the combination of any two intervals is not considered compound, for example,
we have been arriving at the interval of a fifth by stacking two thirds, and
yet a fifth is a simple, not compound interval. Compound intervals are simple
intervals added to octaves.
For
example, we learned that a ninth is the combination of a second and an octave,
and that a thirteenth is the combination of a sixth and an octave.

Arriving
at the correct name for a compound interval is actually quite simple. To
illustrate, I will take the two notes D and F#. We will assume that the F# is
an octave an a major third above the D.
To
determine the "flavor" of the interval (major, minor, augmented,
perfect, diminished) just determine the flavor of the corresponding simple
interval. In other words, if D to the closest F# is a Major third, than the
interval of D to the F# an octave above will also be major.

To
determine the numerical designation of the interval, you merely count as you
would have for a simple interval. The starting note is one, and every note name
up to and including the target note is counted.
If
we experiment with this pattern, we find that, because of the repetition of the
notes at every octave, there is a consistent correlation between intervals.
What I mean by this is, every simple interval of a second, when expanded by an
octave, becomes a compound interval of a ninth. Every third, expanded by and
octave, becomes a tenth. Fourths become elevenths, fifths become twelfths,
sixths become thirteenths, and sevenths become fourteenths. Octaves become
fifteenths, but most musicians will simply refer to this interval of two
octaves as two octaves, or a double octave.
Out
of the compound intervals, the octaves, fourteenths, twelfths, and tenths refer
to note/interval names already encountered in seventh chords as,
correspondingly, Roots, sevenths, fifths, and thirds. As such, these terms are
rarely used. However, ninths, eleventh, and thirteenths are extremely commonly
used terms when discussing harmony, and a comfort with them as great as with
simple intervals is necessary.

intervals, pairing the naming of each with an example based on the note C.
