Look like lighting and sound like thunder. That's today's drum lesson for the professional level musicians. All others can try to keep up. With 16th notes there are 16 notes in a measure with 4/4 time. The snare drum is used to keep the beat on 2 and 4. With the left hand stationary on the left tom the pattern of: R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L takes on a new meaning if I hit the 2 and 4 R right hand on the snare drum and the lefts on the left tom.
Now with the Rights formulate drawing an invisable triangle two different ways. You Start Your first R on the floor tom. The second R goes to the right tom. The third R is already taken up by the snare. End this with the 4th R in the pattern ending where it started...on the floor tom. This looks like a triangle is starting and ending on the same floor tom.
Next is the second half starting on the 5th R (counting the snare as a R ) The right hand hits the right tom. Then the next time the right comes down is on the floor tom. Then on the 4 or the actual 7th time the right hand comes down to hit the drum is the snare. The last right ends on the right tom. Repeat as fast as possible.
Translation for all those that did not understand:
When you count 16th notes they are pronounced different than what is written. They are pronounced as One E and Ah Two E and Ah Three E and Ah Four E and Ah.
They are written as 1 E + A 2 E + A 3 E + A 4 E + A . Played as Right Stick Left Stick etc.
On 1 you hit the floor tom. On E you hit the left tom. On + you hit the right tom. On A you hit the left tom.
On 2 you hit the snare (and basically on every E and A your left hand hits the left tom.) and the + hits the floor tom.
The second triangle going the opposite way with it starting on the right tom and ending on the right tom.
